Sexual Violence
The Lincoln University RSVP Center is committed to providing a safe and supportive campus environment, free from sexual violence. We believe that by raising awareness and offering accessible resources, we can work together to prevent sexual violence and empower survivors to seek the help and support they deserve.
Understanding Sexual Violence
Definition:
- Sexual Violence: Any sexual act or attempt to obtain a sexual act by violence or coercion, including unwanted sexual comments or advances, or acts to traffic or otherwise direct sexual acts against a person’s will, regardless of the relationship to the victim. It encompasses sexual harassment, assault and rape.
Key Statistics:
- 1 in 5 Women and 1 in 16 Men experience sexual assault while in college (National Sexual Violence Resource Center).
- Over 90% of Sexual Assaults on College Campuses are not reported, often due to fear of not being believed or facing stigma (RAINN).
- 81% of Women and 43% of Men report experiencing some form of sexual harassment or assault in their lifetime (National Sexual Violence Resource Center).
Recognizing Sexual Violence
Sexual violence can take many forms and may not always be obvious. Some indicators include:
- Unwanted Touching: Physical contact without consent, even in seemingly harmless contexts.
- Verbal Harassment: Inappropriate comments, sexual jokes or invasive questions.
- Coercion or Pressure: Persistent advances or manipulation to engage in sexual acts.
- Stalking: Following, monitoring or attempting to make unwanted contact, often with the intent to intimidate or control.
Steps to Stay Safe and Support Others
- Practice Consent: Consent should be freely given, mutual, informed and can be withdrawn at any time.
- Stay Aware in Social Settings: Be cautious of your surroundings and look out for friends.
- Trust Your Instincts: If something feels off, remove yourself from the situation and seek support.
- Report and Support: If you witness or experience sexual violence, report it to campus security or contact the RSVP Center. Seeking help early can prevent further harm.
