Lincoln University of Missouri is dedicating the month of April to Mental Health Awareness Month, offering a series of events designed to foster understanding, reduce stigma and promote mental well-being across campus. Recognizing that the academic year concludes in early May, Lincoln University has scheduled a full month of programming to maximize participation and engagement.
Each week in April will feature a themed event aimed at educating and supporting students, faculty, and staff in their mental health journeys.
“Let’s break the stigma — talking about mental health is a sign of strength, not weakness,” said Assistant Director of LU Counseling Services Chrystala Smith. “You don’t have to go through it alone. Reach out, speak up and take the first step toward feeling better.”
Week 1: Mind Matters – Go Green for Mental Health
April 3 | 11 AM – 1 PM | SUC Foyer
The month kicks off with a campus-wide initiative encouraging individuals to wear green, a color symbolizing mental health awareness and hope. T-shirts and green ribbons will be distributed to promote visibility and support for mental wellness.
Week 2: Real Talk – A Student Roundtable with Caring Community Resources
April 10 | 9 AM – 1 PM | SUC Ballroom
In an open forum hosted by Lincoln University’s Counseling Center, students will have the opportunity to engage in candid conversations about mental health, share personal experiences, and learn from peers and professionals about available resources.
Week 3: Self-Care Station
April 16 | 11 AM – 1 PM | In Front of Thompkins Health Center
Students can visit the Self-Care Station to receive free self-care kits designed to provide stress-relief strategies and wellness tools. The station will focus on practical ways to incorporate self-care into daily routines.
Week 4: Mindfulness Meditation
April 23 | 11 AM – 1 PM | SUC Ballroom
A guided mindfulness meditation session will introduce participants to breathing techniques and stress-reduction practices that promote mental clarity and emotional balance.
Week 5: Denim Day
April 30
To close out the month, Lincoln University will participate in Denim Day, a global initiative aimed at combating misconceptions and stigma surrounding mental health. Students and staff are encouraged to wear denim as a symbol of solidarity and awareness.
In addition to these events, several local businesses have generously contributed to the initiative. West Main Pizza has donated food, Scooter’s Coffee has provided gift cards and Central Dairy has offered coupons to support Lincoln University’s efforts in making Mental Health Awareness Month a meaningful and engaging experience.
About Mental Health Awareness Month
Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed nationally since 1949, initiated by Mental Health America to promote awareness, reduce stigma and encourage early intervention and treatment. The observance highlights the importance of mental wellness and resilience in communities across the country.
Lincoln University’s commitment to mental health awareness aligns with this mission, providing students with resources and opportunities to engage in meaningful conversations about mental well-being. By turning awareness into action, the university aims to create a lasting impact on campus and beyond.
