25 in ’25 – Lincoln University Celebrates HBCU Scholar Gabriel Williams

January 31st, 2025

Lincoln University of Missouri is proud to mark the conclusion of the “25 in ‘25” points of pride initiative by celebrating Gabriel Williams, Lincoln University's 2024 HBCU Scholar. A sophomore majoring in broadcast journalism, Williams’ recognition highlights his commitment to academic excellence and leadership.

In fall 2024, Williams was selected for the prestigious U.S. Department of Education White House Initiative on Advancing Equity, Educational Excellence and Economic Opportunity through the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Scholar Recognition Program.

"To be a White House HBCU scholar means the absolute world to me,” Williams said. “I feel HBCUs have always fought against the ideas of doing more with less, so it was beyond inspiring to be around students who have plans to maximize what we have as HBCUs and construct plans moving forward to make sure HBCUs are properly funded and respected.”

The HBCU Scholar program honors outstanding student leaders who exemplify academic achievement, campus involvement, civic engagement and entrepreneurial spirit. Scholars are chosen through a highly selective process, which includes presidential recommendation and endorsement from HBCU faculty. This recognition equips them with valuable tools and resources for continued success.

As an HBCU Scholar, Williams serves as a student ambassador for both the initiative and Lincoln University. In this capacity, he helps disseminate information and opportunities across campus. Williams also attended the 2024 Annual National HBCU Week Conference, where he participated in workshops focused on leadership, professional development and workforce readiness. Through monthly masterclasses, Williams networks with fellow scholars, federal agencies and private partners to highlight the talents within the HBCU community.

Williams said he draws inspiration from HBCU grads and that he is proud to take the baton to continue to blaze the trail forward.

“When we look at some of the most powerful pillars of influence in our land, such as in law, politics, entertainment, etc., we see HBCU grads at the foundation," he said. "People such as Justice Thurgood Marshall, former Vice President Kamala Harris, Oprah Winfrey, Langston Hughes — the list is endless!”

As we close out the “25 in ‘25” initiative this month, we celebrate the achievements and milestones that are driving Lincoln University forward. We are proud to honor individuals like Williams, whose accomplishments represent the core of our mission and the future of our university. With even more exciting developments ahead, we look forward to continuing this journey of excellence in the months and years to come.

"I can assure you the future of our beloved institutions around the country is bright, and the HBCU fire is ever-present,” Williams said.
