English Alumni
We tell our majors to "Take their degrees to work." In the past several years, students earning the degree in English at Lincoln University have found bright careers such as writing, broadcasting, law, editing/publishing, hospital/health administration, education (elementary, secondary, and higher learning), politics, web developing, design, marketing, and communications.
Our majors also take their degrees to graduate school. In the past few years we have helped place students into nationally-recognized programs at Washington University, Indiana University Bloomington, Bennington College's Bennington Writing Seminars, The University of Missouri, University of Denver, and Saint Louis University (to name just a few).

"When I first arrived at Lincoln University, I was unsure about my career goals. An English professor noticed my skills in writing, and spoke to me about becoming an English major. Until then, I'd only used writing as an escape. The English Creative Writing program gave me the push I needed to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. The English major taught me to understand and look at writing and literature in new ways, which has helped me teach my own students at Sumner High School in St. Louis (the first high school for African American students west of the Mississippi River) with more empathy, imagination, and skill. In this fast-paced world, I'm lucky to have learned in Lincoln's English program to slow down, manage my time, be patient, and organize my thoughts. Had I not decided on the English Creative Writing major, it's safe to say I would not be the person I am today."

When I transferred to Lincoln University it changed my life more than I could have imagined. I started off my college career at the University of Missouri as a Business Administration major then switched to Education and felt lost on both paths. I was on the verge of taking a break from school, altogether, when my parents suggested Lincoln, and I am forever grateful for that advice.
Lincoln's English program is phenomenal. Having smaller class sizes and direct and meaningful access to faculty and mentors was a huge part of my academic and future career successes. If not for the English faculty, I would not be on the career path I am on today. They fostered my confidence and creativity in ways that I never imagined possible after my initial university experiences. I appreciated so much the dedication of faculty to each one of their students. Every class was interesting, relevant to my future endeavors, and created an environment to work with other students, some of whom I remain friends with to this day. It is not an exaggeration to say that I would not be where I am today without Lincoln University and its incredible English program.
